Mulling Over "Or Else"

Very rarely am I left with so many notes on a piece of fiction, and so little to definitively say. This story touches upon so very much... The impact of lies and deceit, the yearning for the past, the fantasy lives people construct to obtain a sense of inner peace. I feel entirely ambiguous about the morals and messages contained within the story--at least at its conclusion. Each paragraph has highs and lows, and very many areas where I can connect. I absolutely love how the revelation that Mrs. Hart discovered Lydia and David had been together comes at the very end, in only a brief mentioning. This detail changes the tone of the entire story, something I was going for (and probably not so successfully) in my own piece I submitted. While at the end I'm left thinking, "Huh...? How 'bout that?" I found the story enjoyable, and would certainly give it the title of literary fiction, not commercial fiction.
