Song

I'm not sure how or when or why I stumbled across Mississippi John Hurt, but for whatever reason over the summer I started taking a casual interest in some of his music. A week later after the MJH seed was planted in my brain I was perusing some hole-in-the-wall small town record store and I noticed a picture of an elderly black man, smiling a crinkly eyed smile to something on his upper right and with one hand resting comfortably on the strings of a guitar. It was the complete works of Mississippi John Hurt, and it was on sale. I had spent my whole life never hearing about this guy and then all of the sudden twice in one week he makes his way into my life. It had to fate; I bought the CD.

And this song is just so...good. It's happily melancholy. It's whimsically simple. It's fluidly solid. It makes me want to lie on the grass, kick my shoes off stretch my arms out and just look up at the sky all day.

So anyways, here it is. It's called "Let the Mermaids Flirt with Me." Hope you like it.

  1. wow, that made me super happy. I feel like riding a bike with a basket on the front that has a puppy in it.
